Response to Welcome At The World’s Parliament of Religions
Chicago, 11th September 1893
Sisters and Brothers of America, It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. l thank you in the name of the most ancient order of monks in the world; I thank you in the name of the mother of religions; and I thank you in the name of the millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects. My thanks, also, to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the Orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honor of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration.I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to the southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings:
As the different streams having there sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so, O Lord, the different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee.
The present convention, which is one of the most august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world, of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita:
Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach him; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to Me.
Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization, and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

I dont care whether the voice is original or fake but what appeals is the famous speech delievered by one of the greatest philosopher from our own Motherland. Just imagine the intellect of this MAN that everyword he speaks out is so spontaneous and which means so much. Has there ever existed anyone before or after who have ever glorified our Motherland, our culture, our religion better than HIM? I dont have words to express the magnanimous personality of this saint.

I know your doubts are genuine as I personally presented thsese three speeches to Swamiji Jitatmanandji when he was in Rajkot Ashram two years ago.
He mentioned with all authenticity that Swamiji was not introduced by any lady but it was Prof. Barrow etc.
Now, whatever it may be let us presume it to be original as it sounds divine in preaching with sonorous voice so inspiring , and we should not bother its origin or authenticity. It may be recitation by anyone who cares? It igood by all counts and I’m ready to bellive it to be more real than the existence of god.
I hope not to offend any one by my over confidence.
Pardon my being extra informative that the source is some relative of the Maharaja of Khetri (living in Canada) managed the tape version trasferred on the cassette and the CD etc for our benefit.
May god bless us all to draw inspiration and no doubts.

Being a Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Narendrapur(Kolkata, India) ex-student i read this hair-raising speech a lot of time. Guys is it something really unnatural thing or so-called spiritual ? i mean its all within us as Swamiji rightly said - “Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man” and this speach from Him is the perfect embodiment of the above statement in true senses.
So, let us all say again “We proud indians are the best in whatever we do”

Speech is great. Infact, I don’t care. I am practical person, either is real world.
As long as people live on these planets..there have to be laws and people have to base on those laws..which is severely affected in our country.
India, now is not great..I am straight and clear..We will have to make it great.
People are suffering. Words does’t make peopl live. It is selfish intelligence of all highly educated to beat indirectly bad people in our society what makes us live in a peaceful, honest society.

Perhaps the greatest genuis of all times… its such a pity that his works are not recognised in India mainly by the Congress which blames it to be pro Hindu and some other stuff like that……. look at this state…..! a patriot of such magnitude is being refused recognition by these people for sheer votes and devility…. Vivekananda dreamed of a strong and youthfull nation called India….. but it has now become one of the worst nations where greediness and evil dances with full motion…..
Is this The India we want? Is this the motherland for whom vivekananda worked alll his life ? Are we Indians who turn away from vivekananda and betray him?
Instead of saying this speech is wonderfull and inspiring… start telling people about the magnitude of power and energy which his speeches carry….. tell people what was his dream and let them get carried away by his sheer energy which still drives us……. which will continue to drive true Indians!
Jai hind and long may his ideals stand and let India rise from its ashes!

This discourse very visibly shows how learned this man was. He not only had a profound knowledge of Indian history and religion but was very well aware of western religions.
The way he related the teachings of Geeta with the christian hymn goes a great extent to show that he considered all religions as a means to reach one GOD.
All the religious fanatics that we have today should learn from his teachings.

Dear Brotherhood
There is absolutely no difference whether I hear his voice or some one else representing him. Sure the speaker might have filled with the spirit/soul of Swami. You all must be positive thinkers just as Swami. We all know that besides many noble charactersistics of Swami, NON-CRITICISM, ALWASY-POSITIVE & enCOURAGING appear at every stage… even the great Rabindranath Tagore quotes swami as ‘ …. in his speaches, everything positive…’.
It’s a wonderful gift to learn to be so. Let us not critisize than try to correct if you can, than just giving a blaming statement. After all, putting this audio on web is an attempt to promote Vivekananda our dear guru.

Dear Friends,
We have always longed to hear the voice of our great Master, Swami Vivekananda. We are not really aware whether this speech is original or not. But if it is not original, even in that case, my feeling is that the speaker somehow reached the boundary of originality with his superb oratory power and artistic approach. and if this voice is original then my feeling of gratefulness to the creater of this site would be equally large. But I would like to add, that we have many many sources through which we can validate the authenticity of this speech, as for example by reading about the preparation of Parliament of Religion in 1893 and reading about the people who involved in anchoring.
I would urge to our brothers who live in America to help in this matter. It really does not matter that who read this speech, but it certainly fills our heart with joy if we can really have a speech of Swamiji whose authenticity will be beyond any doubt.

This speech is nothing but a clear rendetion of Swamij’s speech by a person with a commanding unsuspecting voice. I dont think there was any recording that existed of Swami that was saved. If so, Ramakrishna Mission would have publsihed it long long time ago. I myself a alumnus of Ramakrishna Mission has never heard of the existence of any authentic tape till now. So fake is fake. Why pretend about something which does not exist. Offcourse we all wish it was true and I would have loved to hear his voice as I admire him and he is the inspiration for all of us.

Dear Friends,
Never discuss on the voice part of the msg given by Swamiji on 11th september 1893. Every one need to see his point of vision at that an young and small age. The vision he had for furturistic world and the command on his thoughts and approach towards all religions. Who ever is talking of secularism these days, should bow their heads before swamiji’s this one speach. Its enough to say that Hinduism is a real secularism and no certification is needed from any quarter. Thanxs and hatsoff of for bringing this wonderful site. Regards

The divinity is depicted through voice of Vivekananda. He is one of the STARs from the galaxy of divine Krushies. His unfathomable wisdom is pondering throughout his life, only to serve philanthropic causes. His entire life is impeccable devoted for a noble mission. His relationship with humane beings and most importantly his GURUJI - The Great PUJARI in Maa Durga Temple Sri Sri Sad Guru Ramakrishna Paramhansa - is purely based on unselfish, divine, relentless, and true LOVE. It is the lesson that every Indian ought to follow throughout his life. This is a real and personal salute and vandan to this Great Personality (Mahatma), if we Indians determine to follow his teachings and directions. I am following and continuously inculcating his teachings and blessings. Great People are rare to find, but, rare people are the legacy from Indian territory……………….. It can be truly said that Swamiji has breathed life into the Indian National Movement. His workers came like lions and worked out the solution as he has prophesied in the 50 years. But where are the workers now? Hope these recordings pump up enough adrenalin to make real MEN as swamiji has visualized.

The voice of a spiritual person, and particularly of a great Yogi, has always a different quality. While it is forceful, never is it rhetorical even in its oratorial setting, electrifying it may appear very much. Suddenly one is surrounded by a vast calm; the deeper chambers of the being get filled by its presence. It comes from infinity and disappears into infiity, even while thought, vision, feeling, sense and the body’s cells quiver and open to the things of the unknown. The greatness of the subject matter itself gets elevated to the sublimity of the unuttered speech, the transcendental speech, para vani. One wakes up to the omniscient hush. Can we say the same about the recorded voice? I am not quite sure about it.

We are fond of listening Swami Vivekananda’s voice indeed but this voice was spoken by someone.as per my little knowledge, this is not swamiji’s voice because sheer reading of his quote and letters itself,we can feel of his words filled with real love, brave and truth and inspiration which can not be revealed by ordinary one but Swamiji.this word is enough” Sisters and brothers of America” which has not been spoken with the feelings of Swamiji’s universal love . we can easily identify that this is not Swamiji’s voice.Despite this is fake, this site urged us to visit to recollect the memory of the Great master.

The legendary speech that suit to the world even now without any doubt. The greatness of Swamiji is to give such a message to all the scholers of various religions unbelivabe..but simply, asked them to shift their paradigm, turned the entire forum to listen the greatness of human talents without damaging others aspiration, but reconciled them positivily and ultimately tell every one of them in the world of parliment of religion what it should achieve …is bring equallity, erradicate superficial feelings, help the poor and religion is common man to beleive himself and develop the nations to better living world, not to praise own religious philosophy but respect others and erradicate the diffrence among us as human. A man who was new at the start of the forum for the westerners but being known to America and others with his powerful speech…great personality and charactor to admire ..
Apart from his religious speech what great of him is giving confidence to the young genaration, any body who read his books will get confidence, determination….raise from every fall. so he will live forever with us.

Dear All,
We might have wondered why Swamiji addressed his speech beginning with “Sisters and Brothers of America” while every others said “Ladies and Gentleman”. But upon reading his speech, he made us clear that we are ONE. In his speech he said, “Unity in variety is the plan of nature, and the Hindu has recognized it”.
This great thought maps with the moto of our 50th year of Independence celebration, “The World is ONE”.
Swamiji have revealed many such great ideas and thoughts of Hinduism to the world and marked our presence in the world community.
I am proud that I am a born Indian and born Hindu.
Thanks for all the good comments.

By religion, I don’t mean the sacred thread or the marks of ash in our forehead - I mean the philosophy of our religion which had been inscribed in our Vedas….
Swamiji didnt do anything more - He just wanted all of us to be aware of ourselves and more imprtantly of our ‘conscience’.
Away from hatred of caste, away from religious war, away from meaningless despot against others, let us strive to make our country true to the philosophies perceived by our great men like Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Thiruvalluvar, Kabir, Guru Nanak and many many more.
Only then will Their wishes be granted.
PS: Friends, please do not go to the authenticity of the voice and petty things; try to understand these words and imbibe each and every word in ourselves. It is divine.

When I read Swamiji’s speech, I get goosebumps. I cannot read them without getting some kind of emotion. When I heard the speech, it did not create the same effect. Therefore this is not from his holy lips.

Its really a magnificient feeling going through my veins whenever I think of this great man.In school days when i saw my friend painting his picture it was his eyes that caught my attention. It was his picture not himself but the intensity, the wisdom, the intellectuality and the serenity of mind left me mouth struck. And now after reading his speech has left me breathless because I will certainly need to read it again and again the whole speech to understand it much better cause i know every time i read i will learn many different aspects to this speech which would had taken his few minutes but will take my many hours.

No matter, this is swamijis voice or not. But these words are coming from Swami Vivekananda. That will not be opposed by anyone.
The word is like fire, he is like a fire. There is no words explain his power.
Don’t spend time to finding whether this is swamijis voice or not. If you like his words, if you were impressed by his speech. believe it. Otherwise, why you have confusions.

It is a great proud to hear Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa’s closest direct disciple Swami Vivekananad’s speech on this site. The world knows about him. The current generation should understand his message about spirituality and religion. We need his philosophy now to clear up so much mess in this world.
But the voice on this website is definetly is not of swamij’s. No speaker system available during that time. He addressed around 10,000 people in an open auditoruim with his high pitch and voice without any acoustic system.

Some reader get doubt about the speech. I do not remember the name of the Swamiji friend in Shikago, He is a stenographer at that time.
After the speech given by Swamiji some youth demand the copies of Lecture, the said person given the copies to that youth after 3-4 day. So it is wrong to get doubt about this speech.

i think It is not Swamiji’s voice because this voice is not suitable to his personality.
Someone other is reading the speech.
It is not spontenious .
Because the words haven’t feeling in it .
In this speech more concentration is on pronouncesation which happen when we are reading someone others speech .

It is immaterial to debate on the voice of Swami ji. What is important is the text and the content of the speach. If the entire America can be drawn to apt attention to the speach, imagine the power and eloquency and the aura around Swami Vivekananda. We should try and get the essence and preach this tolerence of religion.

Simply awesome - I was moved to tears.
I have read the speech so many times, including the second part which was delivered at the concluding session.
It is really not important whose voice it is. The message is an end in itself.

CONCLUDING ADDRESS - Chicago, Sept 27, 1893
The World’s Parliament of Religions has become an accomplished fact, and the merciful Father has helped those who laboured to bring it into existence, and crowned with success their most unselfish labour.
My thanks to those noble souls whose large hearts and love of truth first dreamed this wonderful dream and then realized it. My thanks to the shower of liberal sentiments that has overflowed this platform. My thanks to this enlightened audience for their uniform kindness to me and for their appreciation of every thought that tends to smooth the friction of religions. A few jarring notes were heard from time to time in this harmony. My special thanks to them,
